I graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 2000, and earned my law degree from Loyola University New Orleans in 2003. During law school, I worked at the Internal Revenue Service on issues relating to small businesses and sole proprietorships, and clerked for two law firms focusing on domestic relations and divorce.

After finishing law school, I worked for a mid-sized law firm representing many of the largest American financial and industrial companies. In 2006 I opened my own practice, The Smith Law Firm, LLC.

Since that time he has represented thousands of individuals in family law cases in class actions. I've tried countless cases to conclusion, won summary judgments, arbitration awards, and favorable settlements for his clients. I've also provided legal analysis to news sources including Missouri Lawyers Weekly, the St. Louis Daily Record, The Countian, Fox 2 (St. Louis), KSDK (St. Louis), NBC KY3 (Springfield, Missouri), and KOLR 10 (Springfield).

Most of my practice is focused on representing clients in divorce, custody, child support, and other family law matters.

During his spare time, I contribute to a variety of non-profit organizations. These include Join Hands ESL, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Habitat for Humanity, SATE, and Missouri Confluence Waterkeeper. I've served as the head coach of the Missouri State University Mock Trial Team, and have sponsored various youth athletic teams and programs.

How much interest accumulates on unpaid child support and maintenance?

Simple interest of 1% per month accumulates on unpaid child support or maintenance. Even though the State of Missouri does not systematically add interest to child support and maintenance payment histories, you are still entitled to collect that interest. Section 454.520 of the Missouri Revised Statutes provides that this interest accumulates on most child support and maintenance awards. In order to physically collect the interest, you may need to file a motion to determine amounts due and owing.

How Child Support is Calculated in Missouri

Child support in Missouri is almost always calculated pursuant to the Form 14. In some cases judges can deviate from the Form 14 amount if it is "unjust and inappropriate". Income of both parents, health insurance costs, overnight visitation credits, and daycare expenses all play a role in calculating support, but those are not the only factors.
