You must consider the type of asset, as well as the tax implications of taking that asset, before you decide who gets the house and the retirement accounts.

In today's video I share the legal requirements to obtain a divorce in North Carolina. The divorce laws in North Carolina are different than in many other states and here you must be physically separated for at least one year before you can apply for a divorce.

However, you must make sure to properly preserve your claims for alimony and equitable distribution before the divorce goes final or risk losing those claims forever.
