Howdy, my name is Meredith Ralls and I’m a criminal defense attorney at Robinson Law. The number one piece of advice of advice I have for all clients, and even my own friends and family, is to never - ever - talk to police officers without a lawyer. You always have the constitutional right to remain silent, and our Founding Fathers fought and died to secure these rights for innocent people, so it’s really important for you to remain silent EVEN IF you have nothing to hide!

Police officers are - highly trained - to interview suspects to make them feel that they’re not “really” admitting to doing anything wrong, or that they have “no choice” BUT to agree with what the police officer says happened. I could spend hours telling you about the hundreds of cases of innocent people who made false confessions.

Even if you don’t confess to a crime, the police can still use your words against you. You can’t talk yourself out of an arrest, you can only talk yourself into one. So remain calm, remain silent, and remember to Lawyer Up Virginia!
