Jim Hurley has been practicing injury law throughout Virginia for over two decades. He has tried more than 100 cases and handled hundreds more that were settled out of court. He is guided by the principle that the client is in charge of his or her case and should be kept fully aware of the litigation process.
Jim Hurley and John Cooper set up Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers in 2011. In recent years the firm appointed a third partner Bill O’Mara and fourth partner Griff O'Hanlon. The firm retains its family friendly focus and does not represent criminal defendants like drunk drivers who hurt our clients.
He is an active member of the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association, the Virginia Beach Bar Association, the American Association for Justice, and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.
Jim Hurley is the author of The Best Guide to Virginia Car Accidents and Injuries. He has been awarded an AV Rating by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating given, for his practice of law.
Jim Hurley was named in Virginia Super Lawyers every year since 2014. Only 5 percent of attorneys achieve this accolade. He has a 10/10 rating on Avvo, a lawyer assessment agency.

Hi everybody! Cassidy Lewis here with Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers. And I have two of our friends- Ms. Williams and Mr. Faircloth- from Larrymore Elementary.
Mr. Faircloth, could you tell us a little bit about your school?
Well, Larrymore Elementary School is a Title I school, Norfolk Public School. We have Pre-K through 5th grade at Larrymore; we have about 600 students. We have an amazing program there; we're fully accredited now for the 8th straight year. Working really hard just to trying to adapt and navigate the new virtual classroom.
Absolutely. Talk to me a bit about what that virtual classroom is gonna look like this year, Ms. Williams.
Well, the virtual classroom is gonna be very new to all of our teachers, all of our students, and our parents, so we're encouraging of all our parents to reach out to our teachers as much as possible, and also, it's gonna be on Zoom for the first nine weeks, at least, so, making sure that they get on and they actually sit in their classrooms. The teachers have created instruction for them via Zoom, so it's gonna be daily Zoom lessons prepared for them.
And our teachers have been working really hard all summer; they pretty much gave up their summer to do a lot of professional development to try to navigate the new virtual world, as it's a brand new role in education.
Wow- right; absolutely. So, at the start of the year, and today's the 1st day of school, At the start of the year, and really, before the year got started, how did you prepare students? Did they have everything that they needed, or what?
Well, it's been- it's been an adventure as I call our theme for Larrymore is a "Different Times Adventure 2021," and so, What we did when we got out March 13th, it's been about six months ago, and so we started to navigate; we worked on creating a lot of instructional things to get the kids through the year, we did a device pickup about halfway through that, so a lot of our students were able to pick up Chromebooks and MiFi devices. And so, as we evolved through the summer, we let them keep those, because we just weren't sure what the new year was gonna bring. So, sure enough, we're virtual. So, the students that kept theirs- they were good, and we We started the process again. So just last week, we had three long days of device checkouts, MiFi checkouts, as well as supply pickup. So this year what we did for supplies, instead of asking parents for supplies, the schoolhouse provided the supplies, so we got backpacks for every student in every grade level, and tried to- we're just trying to make this process as easy and flexible as we can, and want to thank the parents and all our staff members for being so flexible and understanding through this whole ordeal.
Now friends, if you don't know, here at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, we have made a commitment to education- especially our Norfolk Public Schools. So my friends actually came by today to pick up a check for $5,000 to help you guys with your new virtual classrooms, to assist your students in whatever else you may need it for. Thank you guys so much for everything that you do for our students, for our families here in Norfolk; we've been in Norfolk. We got started here. We have 8 locations, but this is our headquarters. So we love Norfolk and we thank you all.
Thank you. We love you. And I have to give a shoutout to our Assistant Principal, our brand new Assistant Principal, Ms. Williams. We're overjoyed, and this is gonna be such a great benefit for our kids.

He'll be receiving $2,000 as he begins college this fall at Virginia State University. We're proud of you, Ronnie. Ronnie's a graduate of Indian River High School, where he played football. I also went to Indian River High School, many years ago, and played football. So, I was excited to see his application, and excited to see him win one of these awards. We're still big supporters; we go to the games still; I take my daughters on Friday nights. Best of luck to you, Ronnie. We know you're gonna do great at Virginia State, and keep in touch, Go Braves!

We help people when they've been injured, and oftentimes, people are injured at hotels, restaurants, businesses, and if you're injured at a hotel or a restaurant or a business, especially in a hotel, these are some of the steps you need to take: there's three main things you need to do.
Number one: you need to make a formal complaint with the place where you were injured so they have it documented that you were injured.
Number two: you wanna take out your cell phone and go ahead and take a video of the area and go ahead and take appropriate photos so that way we know exactly how it looked and exactly what injured you at the time it happened. Don't expect the hotel to do that; don't expect the restaurant to do that, but you can do it, or a friend can do it, depending on how badly injured you are.
The third thing, and really the most important thing is is that you've gotta get medical treatment for your injuries. Oftentimes, people will injure themselves at a hotel or they'll slip and they'll fall and they'll cut themselves and they'll feel terrible, but they'll think, "Hmm, I don't need any medical treatment- I don't want any medical treatment- but believe me- if you don't seek the appropriate medical treatment, and it turns out you're seriously injured, a month, two months later, that hotel's insurance company's gonna say, "Sorry- injury not related." So it's important to get the proper medical follow-up care.
At Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, we help people when they've been injured like this. So please, touch base with us.

[Jim Hurley] I'm Jim Hurley of Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, and recently Daniel Jarman and myself gave a continuing legal education seminar on great tips when you're negotiating with insurance companies. Daniel has a huge experience with that. Dan, I want you to talk a little bit about the three top tips in trying to negotiate on a personal injury settlement with an insurance company.
[Daniel Jarman] I would say the top tip would be to know who you're talking to on the phone, whether it be a low level insurance adjuster who has very little in the way of settlement authority, or somebody that has the ability to make the decisions on their own. Knowing who to talk to can yield more money.
Number two would be: know the punitive damages and know how to back that up to build your case moving forward.
The third key would be making sure early on that you're in communication with the insurance companies when it comes to their reserving issues.
[Jim] Daniel, talk a little bit about the reserves; a lot of people aren't familiar with that.
[Daniel] I would say reserves are how an insurance company faces their books so they know they have enough money set aside to settle all claims and still remain profitable. They use phone calls to gather more information. On each phone call they're trying to figure out, "Do we have enough money set aside?" If you use that to your advantage to get it to the higher level adjusters who have much more discretion when settling cases, it is to your advantage to get that file moved early on but as part of the negotiations, even though you haven't built your demand package yet.
[Jim] And Daniel has worked for the insurance company, the dark side, the other side, for years and years and years and now he's helping Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers negotiate their files. So, we hope these tips maybe can help you when you have a personal injury case.

Virginia, each and every year, has thousands of motorcycle accidents, and because of those motorcycle accidents you have thousands of injuries. People- when they're driving in their cars or their trucks- often don't pay attention to motorcyclists. They merge into traffic with the motorcyclist right next to them because they're in the blind spot. They make a turn right in front of the motorcyclist so the motorcyclist has to lay down the motorcycle- has no other option.
Here at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, we help injured motorcyclists each and every day and each and every week. Often times, the injuries from a motorcycle crash can be horrific- days, weeks in the hospital, months of recovery, broken bones.
So let us help you if you you've ever been injured in a motorcycle wreck because of some other driver here in Virginia not paying attention. That's what we do at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, and let us help you. That's what we would like to do.
