I passed the Alabama exam and began practice in Phenix City,Alabama in 1969. For a year I was trained by a criminal and civil trial attorney, Frank P. Samples, who I have always considered to be one of the best trial lawyers I have ever seen. I then entered solo practice and began to take criminal, domestic, probate, insurance, personal injury and social security disability cases. I also wrote a legal brief reviewing the history of a lien statute from early 1800's and received a favorable decision of the Alabama Supreme Court in a landmark decision--Harrelson vs. Empire Home Loans--on priority of lien holders. I convinced the Court that the law was changed by statutory amendment in 1933 and thereafter gave banks priority over material lien holders if the improvements could not be severed from the land. The prevailing view before the decision was the opposite and a Virginia Law review article even supported the wrong view of the law. In 1971 I passed the Georgia exam when the pass rate was in the 20% range. Then I expanded my practice to Columbus, Georgia. I recovered a jury verdict in 1970 for $30,000 for termination of the electrical power of a client. My first personal injury trial resulted in a jury verdict of $30,000 in 1972 when the liability coverage was only $10,000. I sued the liability insurer of the negligent driver and recovered the balance of $20,000. I tried and won a will contest in 1972 valued at over $1 million. I tried a bus wreck in case in Federal Court in Columbus in 1973 and the jury returned a verdict of $300,000. Next was an arm injury in the local mill and a jury verdict in Columbus Federal court of $150,000 in 1975. Then I filed and tried a wrongful death case of a young worker at a local paper mill in Columbus Federal Court and a predominately female jury awarded the young wife and mother of two small sons $1 million in 1979. At the time it was the largest death verdict in Georgia history. Over the years I have recovered multiple death and serious injury verdicts in excess of $1 million. During that time I have also handled motor vehicle wreck claims of $500,000 down, work injuries of $750,000 down, product liability injuries of $400,000 down, fall down of $50,000 down, discrimination cases, and hundreds of worker compensation claims and social security disability claims before judges in Alabama and Georgia. I have successfully written many legal briefs convincing appellate courts of the correctness of the claims of my clients when the lower courts and judges disagreed. I love my work and the intellectual challenge and have no plans to quit, as being very avid at running, weight training and fitness, my health is excellent.
